Over the last two years, writer Trevor Boehm and photographer Kara Payne have been working with the members of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in northeast Montana, engaging, listening, and photographing the tribes’ most respected, and possibly last, full-blooded members. The result of that time has been a revealing, intimate, and fascinating snapshot into a historically significant, even prophetic, people. The work you see published on this website presents an illustrative and intimate glimpse into their lives. These excerpts are a part of an on-going work.
Note on the text: The following stories are the artist’s interpretations and re-creations of stories passed on from the elders of the Fort Peck Reservation. While the author has intended to remain faithful to both the style and content of the recorded stories, in order to present a more intimate and fluid encounter with the narratives, artistic license is used. Where indicated, the elders are directly quoted. In stories where no characters are named, the work is the imagination of the author.
